Service Dog

Service dog training is specialized for every situation, with a service dog performing specific tasks from sniffing potential life-threatening allergy threats to strokes and other health complications.

Service dog training and registration might not be suitable for all dogs and requires a rigorous training regiment.

Emotional Support Dog

Emotional support Animals (ESAs) provide comfort to individuals suffering from anxiety, stress or other mental health concerns, and help them deal with challenges that might otherwise compromise their quality of life.

Therapy Dog

Therapy dogs provide relief to individuals to those in facility settings, or to individuals who require comfort with dealing emotional, or physical problems. Unlike Emotional Support Animals, therapy dogs do not require advance training or prescription from a healthcare professional.

*Training must either be conducted with one of our pre-approved trainers, or an application submitted by a local trainer for accreditation.

Why Choose Service Paws?

Artboard 2november 24.png

Unlike most online service dog registration where you pay a one-time fee and get a card with your pet's picture on it. Here at Service Paws all Service & Emotional Support Dogs must receive training and be approved by our staff to qualify.

We hold the belief that when you see a Service Paws vest on any dog in public, they will be perfectly trained and represent what a true service dog must be.

We also believe in helping change the lives of dogs in need, we work with many animal rescues & sanctuaries across the world. With every program purchased, we can take 1 dog off the streets and into a new home.

  • Can a person ask me why I need a service dog?
No one is ever allowed to ask you specifically about your disability. They may only ask you two questions regarding your service dog. -Is that a service dog? (if you choose not to wear a SD vest) -What services does your dog provide? *they may not ask you to demonstrate *
  • Things you need to know about travelling with your service dog
Taking the step to adopt and train a service dog is tough work. The bond a handler and a service dog develops is one of the deepest and most meaningful relationships that exist. A challenge many service dog handlers face is how to travel and enter public spaces with their service dog. Especially at places with a no-pet policy. Restaurants, hotels, and airports are typically better informed about service dog laws. However, places like the beach, movie theaters, and schools are less informed about service dog rights. It also brings up specific questions that may be hard to answer. 1). Is my service dog required to wear a vest? 2). What if my service dog is denied access? The most important step is to understand service dog laws clearly. We have included a few tips on how to handle and work with hostile employees who are aggressive or ignorant about your service dog.
  • What should I say when an employee asks me about my service dog?
The first step is to assess if the person is aware of service dog rules and regulations. A). If they are aware of service dog rights, simply inform them that you are traveling with a certified service dog, and confirm the task your service dog provides. Thank them for asking politely and proceed with your day. B). If they are not aware, show them your service dog certification or license. Inform them that your dog is a trained service dog and has public access rights. Let them know that your dog will not interrupt business practices and will remain by your side, as permitted by federal law. C). If they remain hostile towards your service dog and deny you access, refer them to Service Dog Certifications for more information on service dog laws. Let them know that they are violating your rights and are openly discriminating against your disability by preventing you access. Ask them to speak to their manager and stay firm but calm and polite. By staying firm and helping them understand service dog rights, you are helping other service dog handlers avoid negative confrontations in the future.
  • Do I qualify for an emotional support dog ?
If you have a psychological or emotional condition, and your dog can provide you support and comfort, then you can qualify to have an emotional support animal. If you plan on getting an emotional support animal in Ontario, you will need an ESA letter. These letters can only be provided by a qualified mental health professional who can practice in your province.
  • Do you need to carry a service dog licence?
Under the Ontario Human Rights Code and the AODA , service animals do not need to have certificates or identity cards. However, you may be asked to provide acceptable documentation. This includes: documentation from a regulated health professional.
  • How do I get a certified service dog?
There are two ways to be certified: Receive a trained dog from an accredited school. Pass a public safety test.
  • Do service dogs need to wear a vest?
In Canada service animals must wear a jacket, cape, vest or other equipment to indicate that they are a working animal assisting someone with a disability.
  • what disqualifies a dog from becoming a service dog?
The dog must be able to remain behaviourally stable in a wide range of environments; gentle and non-reactive (no barking, growling, etc.). The dog must be able to remain focused, quiet, and dutiful to its handler versus wandering or becoming distractible.
  • Is it illegal to pretend your dog is a service dog?
Bill 80, known as the Ontario Service Dogs Act, dictates "no person shall falsely represent himself or herself as being a person with a disability for the purpose of claiming the benefit of this Act." In Ontario a person who contravenes the prohibition is liable to a fine of up to $5,000.
  • What are Canada's service dog laws?
National regulations require most major air, rail, marine and bus carriers to accept a service dog for on board transportation, free of charge. In some circumstances, Canadian carriers must also provide adjacent seating without charging additional fares or any other fees.
  • Do ESA and Therapy dogs get the same benefits as a service dog?
Service animals have training to perform specific tasks for people with disabilities. Emotional support animals provide comfort and security. However, they do not have training for specific tasks. Therefore, emotional support animals do not qualify as service animals under the AODA. Service dogs are the only working animal with access anywhere the handler is allowed.

What Pet Owners Say

"Very Professional"

“While getting your dog registered and legitimately trained to be a service dog seemed daunting, Service paws made the process easy and trustworthy. The trainer I found through their website worked with both me and my dog to give both of us the information and training we needed to pass our public access test and for my dog Bruno to be task trained and help me get into the world. ”

"Great Service"

“I am an elementary school teacher and thanks to Service Paws, my French bulldog is trained to come to work with me and provide emotional support to all of the students in my school! Little Scout takes his job very seriously thanks to the great training and manners he learned throughout our time learning from Service Paws.”

"Kind & Loving"

“For years I have been worried when I go out to eat or attend parties due to my allergy. It is such a relief having my dog trained to detect gluten. He is now my partner in crime every where I go keeping me safe, all thanks to Service Paws and the amazing trainer they sent me to!”
